Event Description

Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA) and InsideNGO are pleased to announce a partnership to offer a 2015 monitoring and evaluation (M&E) webinar series.

Each quarter, a webinar highlighting a critical M&E topic will be presented by leading experts from VEGA and InsideNGO members.  The webinars are free and open to anyone interested in discussing and learning about best practices in M&E.  (Recorded versions of the webinars will be available to VEGA and InsideNGO members.)

Speakers: Emily Burrows, Guy Sharrock, and Susan Hahn

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has developed a practical and comprehensive approach to developing an M&E system that supports learning and decision making based on evidence. The approach is called SMILER (Simple Measurement of Indicators for Learning and Evidence-based Reporting).  CRS staff will present an overview of SMILER and how it works. This will be followed by an example from a multi-sector program in Zambia: implementing the SMILER system with staff and partners, and using an ‘evaluative thinking’ approach to establish good learning practices as part of the M&E system.  CRS will share SMILER tools, best practices and lessons learned.

Emily Burrows is the Chief of Party for Mawa Project, a USAID Zambia food and nutrition security project funded under the Feed the Future initiative. Mawa’s integrated package of services helps households reap the nutrition and economic benefits of diversified agricultural production for more resilient families and communities. Emily began her career with Catholic Relief Services in Burkina Faso in 2002, where she assisted in the design of a food security program. With experience designing and managing development programs in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia, she has technical expertise in agricultural livelihoods, economic resilience and nutrition.

Susan Hahn started working at CRS in Burkina Faso in1982 where she managed a program in food and nutrition.  She continued her CRS career in Africa serving as the Regional Director in three regions: Southern Africa, West Africa, and East Africa.  Susan served in CRS headquarters as the Director of the Program Quality Support Department and as Technical Advisor for Monitoring and Evaluation.  Susan is a co-author of the CRS ProPack series of manuals on project design, implementation, management, and monitoring and evaluation.  Since 2008, Susan has worked with the CRS M&E team as a consultant.
