Geospatial Impact Evaluation Methodology
AidData and affiliated researchers of the AidData Research Consortium have employed cutting-edge geospatial impact evaluation (GIE) methodologies to create new cost and time efficient ways to measure programmatic impact.
On July 15, USAID hosted a webinar "Going Geospatial with Impact Evaluations" where AidData researchers highlighted how this new, innovative methodology is being employed to evaluate program interventions. The presentation will include case examples from:
- USAID: Measuring the effectiveness of a USAID-sponsored land tenure program in Ecuador.
- KfW (German Development Bank): Measuring forest cover changes resulting from the KfW Indigenous Lands Project, which demarcated indigenous community lands in Brazil’s Amazon region.
- World Bank: Estimating the treatment effects of a large World Bank-funded effort to combat malaria in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Access a very early alpha release of the Spatial Causal Inference package created for R, which can be found on Github. You can access the package at this link: https://github.com/itpir/SCI. Users should consult the readme file before using the package. Explicit instructions for use, example data, scripts, and other code comments can be found in the "/man/" ("manual") folder. The AidData Center for Development Policy is a collaborative initiative between the College of William & Mary, Brigham Young University, Development Gateway, the University of Texas-Austin, and Esri, that makes targeted, coordinated aid information and tools more accessible and usable to a wide range of stakeholders. AidData is also a Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN) partner with USAID’s Global Development Lab.
USAID Missions and Bureaus have a couple of existing pathways or vehicles through which they may work with AidData:
One is through a buy-in under the Lab’s HESN cooperative agreement. To learn more about the Lab’s HESN cooperative agreement, please contact Kristina Kempkey. Alternatively, AidData is a team member on a successful consortia led by IBTCI under USAID/PPL's 5-year, M&E IDIQ (AID-SOL-OAA-14-000054). Under this mechanism, which provides for a range of evaluation, training, and technical assistance services, AidData is available to undertake discrete experimental and quasi-experimental research projects, including geospatial impact evaluations and RCTs.
