Event Description

Unpacking the potential of emerging approaches to monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning New approaches to adaptive programming and monitoring, evaluation, research and learning (MERL) have generated significant buzz for their potential to accelerate development impact.

Adaptive learning, closing feedback loops, and decision-focused evaluations are just some of many terms trying to capture the zeitgeist of the moment -- the sense that getting development assistance to “work” on the ground means thinking about how organizations and people learn, the incentives and cultural norms that shape behaviors, and the evidence and feedback necessary to guide decisions.

What have we learned about learning? What are the new approaches being tried and what are the experiences thus far? Do they represent transformational shifts in thinking and practice or more evolutionary progress? Who are some of the players and what are their practical limitations?

Bringing together a mix of thinkers and doers, this event will focus not only on if and why we need new adaptive learning approaches, but also how those approaches are evolving in practice by groups and individuals experimenting with new ways of working.
