Learning Lab

The purpose of the Collaborating, Learning, and Adapting (CLA) Case Competition is to source examples of CLA in action among USAID missions and implementing partners. The 2016 submission period lasted from June 1—July 15 and resulted in 63 qualifying entries from 11 USAID missions and operating units and 37 implementing partners in 26 countries.

A team of judges from the USAID LEARN contract read all 63 entries and chose 20 finalists to be reviewed by a panel of judges in the USAID Bureau for Policy, Planning, and Learning. After much deliberation, five winners were identified. An additional winner will be chosen via online and in-person Fan Favorite Voting in November. To be notified when Fan Favorite Voting begins, join the Learning Lab mailing list.

Cases were evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • CLA in Action - Does the case story clearly demonstrate how a CLA tool or approach was used and what the outcome was?
  • Analysis - Does the case story reflect on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the tool/approach used? Is the case transparent and honest in highlighting the good, the bad, and the ugly?
  • Holistic Approach to CLA - Does the case story represent a holistic approach to C, L, and A? Does the case demonstrate a systematic, intentional, and resourced approach to CLA? Framework components: collaborating, learning, adapting, culture, processes, and resources.
  • Replicability - Does the case story identify key lessons that can be used to improve future practice, either within your team or by others?

The five winners listed below will receive awards and will be featured in a CLA showcase this fall. The other 15 finalists are listed below. All qualifying cases and will be posted on USAID Learning Lab in the coming months.
