Theory of Change Revision Guide

Description

What is this guide?

USAID/Vietnam and Social Impact developed the Theory of Change Revision Guide to support implementing partners in Vietnam and elsewhere to more effectively review, reflect upon, and revise their theories of change. Making close reference to USAID's Theory of Change Workbook, the guide poses questions, at different levels and for different scenarios, to teams participating in a TOC revision process to help them have better conversations and take appropriate action. The guide can be used internally or with external stakeholders, either in-person or online, and for teams operating in any sector. By sharing the guide, we hope that Missions and implementing partners elsewhere are better equipped to revise their TOCs in response to new information and changing circumstances.

What do I need to use the guide?

We recommend teams interested in using the guide:

  1. Review the guide and familiarize yourself with its functionality. Note that this slide deck is not intended to be used as a standard presentation deck. Your team should use the many links and buttons to navigate through the file based on your responses to the prompts.
  2. Identify a facilitator, from within or outside of your team, to support participants through the process. This individual would be responsible for organizing the session, posing the guide's questions to participants, and helping them come to meaningful, shared conclusions.
  3. Engage a wide range of stakeholders, especially local counterparts. A range of experiences and insights should inform your theory of change revision process.

Where can I go for support?

We would be thrilled to hear your feedback and suggestions for improving the Theory of Change Revision Guide, and would be happy to give you advice on how to make the best use of it. Feel free to contact Sean Mulkerne if you have any questions, ideas, or insights.
